How It Works
Intelligence-Driven Dark Web Detection and Characterization System (ID-DWDCS)
Initial Design Model
Tor and VPN are two common techniques for dark web communications and decouple the sender from the receiver by encrypting the traffic between them and routing it through a distributed network of servers or private tunnel.
Traffic analysis and pattern recognition are one of the best techniques to analyze the adversary behaviors and classify them in the dark web.
ID-DWDCS generates two encrypted traffic datasets and shows a time-based analysis of Tor and VPN traffic flows, along with a detection system with more than 90% accuracy.
We used two scenarios, one to detect encrypted traffic flows from non-encrypted and the other to detect the adversaries’ application types include Browsing, Chat, Streaming, Mail, VoIP, P2P, and File Transfer. Both generated datasets are publicly available namely ISCXVPN2016 and ISCXTor2016.
